Chapter Five
Holly
It really is sweet of Nick to offer to help me fix the pottery. I mean, who knows, maybe I would have come up with the idea myself anyway…but I love that he was the one who suggested it.
Before we start working, though, I really do want to check in with my brother and make sure he’s doing okay. As I sift through my supplies, looking for some resin and gold powder, I give my brother a call.
“Hey, Hol,” Oliver’s scratchy voice says as he answers the phone. “How’d today go?”
“Hey, Oliver,” I say. “It went great. But how are you?”
“I slept most of the day. I feel about the same, though.”
“Okay. I’ll keep this short. I just wanted to check in with you. Do you want me to swing by tomorrow morning? Bring you anything?”
“I’m good. Thanks, sis.” He coughs a few times. “Well? Tell me about today. What’d I miss?”
I draw in a breath. The events of the day whirl through my mind. Nick warming up to me…him getting me lunch and that delicious cup of hot cocoa…him coming up with the idea to repair the shattered pottery…
“Hol?” says Oliver. “You still there?”
“Yes,” I say quickly. “Sorry. Let’s see. I sold a lot today. Over half my inventory, actually.”
“That’s amazing!” says Oliver. He coughs again, then says, “Nick help you out enough?”
“Yeah. He was great. He’s actually…” I catch myself in time before I accidentally almost tell my brother that Nick is in my apartment right now.
“He’s actually what?” asks Oliver.
“Oh, nothing. I was just going to say…he’s actually been more helpful than I expected.”
“Cool,” says Oliver. “Anything else?”
Nick’s face pops into my mind again. Nick’s handsome face. I guess I’ve always realized that he was hot, but…I don’t know. It’s like he’s so much hotter now.
I push thoughts of Nick out of my mind and focus on the phone call.
“Um…not for now. I don’t want to keep you,” I say. “I’ll check in with you tomorrow, okay?”
“Yep. Sounds good. Night, sis.”
“Night, Ollie.”
As soon as I hang up with Oliver, I find the container of resin and the gold powder. I find a couple of paint brushes, too. Relieved that I have all of the necessary supplies, I parade them triumphantly into the living room. Nick smiles when I enter the room.
“All right,” he says. “Just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.”
I wish you would come over here and kiss me, Nick.
Whoa. Shit. Where did that thought come from? I blink a couple times and close my fingers tightly around the supplies in my hands.
“Everything okay?” Nick asks.
“Yep,” I say. I set the supplies down and busy myself with putting paper towels down on the table to protect the surface. “You don’t need to stay long, by the way. I just mean, feel free to leave whenever you want.”
Nick shrugs. “We’ll see.”
You don’t like Nick, Holly. You can’t like Nick. He’s your brother’s best friend. Not to mention that he’s too old for you…
We sit down at the table.
